God’s way ahead of us … I’ll never forget ye

God’s way ahead of us …
I’ll never forget years ago, when I was invited to a conference and God showed me this truth. In preparation for my weekend trip, I asked God to use my time away to teach me what direction I should go with regards to impending decisions. When I arrived at the hotel, I was given a room on the twenty-eighth floor. After settling in, I opened my Bible and prayed. Three hours passed. I was looking for an epiphany but received no answers.

I closed my Bible, then pulled up a comfy chair and peered out the large picture window that framed a breathtaking sunset. From that height, I could see for miles. Then my attention was drawn below to a traffic jam on the interstate. The road was gridlocked, and cars were backed up for miles. Sirens wailed and emergency vehicles sped by. Instead of the anticipated peaceful view, I saw a disaster on the highway. As cars approached the entrance ramp, I wanted to warn them. From my bird’s-eye view, I saw both impending dangers and the better route. I wanted to shout warnings such as:

• “Slow down, you don’t know what’s coming!”
• “If you keep going, you’ll wind up in stopped traffic, with no way out!”
• “Hold up! There’s a wreck ahead, and you’re about to wind up in it!”
• “If you knew what I know, you’d go the other way!”

God then whispered to my heart:

“You sound like Me. I know what’s on your path. I see impending danger. I know roadblocks that have popped up in your life. But I also know about the potential wreck waiting to happen if you continue on this path. You can trust Me completely to help you find the best route.”

God did teach me.

No matter how things look from a human perspective, God knows the right path and what lies in our future. We can ask God for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding (Proverbs 2:6). Even when it seems we’re driving in the dark, we can trust that God knows what He’s doing. As God orchestrates the circumstances, we’ll learn the right way to go.

Good morning and happy Monday! It will be okay but maybe right about now you’re waking up to a hard week. Maybe you can’t continue to walk. The path has become too steep. In your weary state, maybe you just need God to hold you.

At ages three and seven, when my daughters were walking with our family in the woods one day, my husband recorded the girls’ movements with his video camera. The seven-year-old scurried down the path with complete confidence. But the three-year-old stopped abruptly, wheeled around to face the camera, and with arms held high to her daddy said, “Hold me!” At first, my husband replied that his hands were full holding the camera. But she insisted, so he handed the camera to me and picked her up.

Perhaps at some time we’ve all felt like my three-year-old daughter.
Weary.
Steep.

We can either plop down on the ground, or we can lift our heads and hands up to God and ask Him to hold us.

David was often in a state of turmoil and confusion. And to whom did he turn? He directed his cries to God. As David lamented, he lifted his hands in prayer. The uplifting of hands showed his need, his humility, and his confidence. He knew God was his only help and that God would be faithful and hold him up.

Isaiah 63:9 tells us, “In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them; In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, and He lifted them and carried them all the days of old.”

God carries us! When the path has become steep, dark, or rocky, He holds us. He holds our hearts in times of sorrow, too.

He holds our hand so we don’t go alone.

Deuteronomy 1:31 tells us, “The Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.”

Like David and my daughter, let’s lift up our hands and ask for help. Reach for Jesus. He’s holding onto us.
